SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)
What is Social-Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals develop competencies in the following 5 areas:
1
Self-Awareness
2
Self-Management
3
Social Awareness
4
Relationship Skills
5
Responsible Decision-Making
A strong SEL foundation is a crucial part of understanding and managing one’s emotions, building healthy relationships, and making responsible decisions. Students that lack social and emotional skills face many challenges throughout childhood, including the ability to focus, control impulses, and develop and maintain friendships. This can result in poor academic performance and behaviors that negatively impact school climate. These issues often lead to a lifetime of difficulties.
Our SEL facilitators help students learn and develop lifelong skills, including how to positively interact with peers and adults; show empathy; make better choices; solve problems; and manage stress. All of this can help students be successful in school and beyond. Students who join the program will take part in small group lessons and activities once every week during their lunches or free periods.
