Officer Hazelton was a 14 year member of the City of Dunkirk Police Department\, serving as the department’s K-9 Officer for the past two years of his career. Matt was also a loving father and devoted husband. Matt lost his long\, hard fought battle with ALS on August 6th 2017. Matt was one of the highest producing officers of the Dunkirk Police Department with both traffic tickets and arrests. He didn’t just write tickets and arrest people either. He talked to them\, helped them and did his best to find a solution to their problems. He was active on the Department’s Dive Team and Special Response Team. \n\n\n\nThe loss of Matt has left a void in the community and department that is unable to be filled. Matt’s drive and work ethic was like no other. When he arrived at work\, the switch was turned on and did not go off until he was on his way home. It is now our job to make sure that Matt’s name and legacy live on. The Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association will be hosting this 5K to fund a scholarship in Matt’s name that will be awarded to a student\, or students\, who are planning to continue their education in the criminal justice field. It is also our hope to raise awareness for ALS.
